Who must be licensed?
Any person who works in the onsite wastewater industry as a pumper, installer, portable restroom operator or manufacturer of septic tanks needs to be licensed. If you work for a company that does this type of work, only one person who is in responsible charge of the company must be licensed.

What types of licenses are available?
Basic Level Installer - for installation of conventional onsite systems.

Advanced Level I Installer - for installation of engineered designed wastewater treatment systems.

Advanced Level II Installer

Pumper - for pumping of septic tanks, portable toilets.

Portable Restroom Operator – for operating portable toilets only.

Manufacturer - for manufacturing of concrete or plastic septic tanks.

How do I obtain a license?
1. Take required training course.
2. Successfully pass exam (oral or written).
3. Submit application and application fee.
4. Submit bond.
5. Submit annual license fee.

Where can I get registered for the training course?
Currently, the only organization offering the first time training is the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Association. Their phone number is 334/396-3434. They offer first time installer, portable restroom, manufacturer and pumper training.

Where can I get continuing education?
Call the Board's office or view the upcoming events calendar on this web page for a listing of all approved continuing education courses. In addition to those approved by the AOWB, courses may be taken at educational institutions in your area. Call the AOWB before attending any course not listed as an approved course for more information.

How many continuing education hours do I need each year?
1 license=6 hours
2 licenses=10 hours
3 licenses=14 hours


When do I renew my license?

Renewal notices will be mailed to each licensee in October of each year. However, you can renew your license at any time once your CEU is completed.   Licenses are non renewable after 1 year.  First time training and testing must be completed in order to obtain your license again.

Can licenses be shared?
No! No person shall use or allow their license to enable anyone other than the license holder and his employees directly supervised by the license holder to perform onsite wastewater work. Licenses issued cannot be sold or transferred. Any license which is misused may be revoked by the board.
